Money Heist

Netflix has ordered a spin-off series Money Heist about the character Berlin. The Spanish crime drama tells the story of a group led by a mysterious criminal mastermind known as "The Professor" (Álvaro Morte). Actor Pedro Alonso stars as "Berlin", a terminally ill jewel thief whose true identity is Andrés de Fonolosa. The plot involves a group of criminals, each with a special skill, participating in an ambitious attempt to steal hundreds of millions of euros from Spain's royal mint.

The series rights for Money Heist were acquired by Netflix from Spanish network Antennas 3 in 2017. With them came the decision to re-cut the original 15 episodes into 22 and release them in two parts, with part one and part two in December 2017. in April 2018. However, Money Heist proved to be a huge success with international audiences, becoming the most-watched foreign language ever on the streaming platform in 2018; Only recently did squid overtake the game. In July 2020, a final Money Heist Season 5 was confirmed to be in the works, with it releasing in two five-episode volumes on September 3 and December 3, respectively.

With the final episode of Money Heist Season 5 to be released on December 3, it was announced on the La Casa de Papel Twitter account (the show's original Spanish title) that the show's prequel, Berlin, would hit screens in 2023, with Alonso is returning to reprise his role. Along with the heroic, sacrificial death of the character in Money Heist Season 2 due to an illness that threatened to shorten the character's life, Berlin will likely have an origin story. As of yet, no further announcement has been made regarding the plot, or if any other characters in the series will return. The teaser trailer can be seen here:

Despite the paucity of information provided from the teaser, there are plenty of clues to help fuel speculation about the new Berlin spinoff. As fans of the show will know, Berlin had an interesting family history. Most notable is his relationship with the Professor, his boss, who was also revealed to be his half-brother in Money Heist Season 2. Given their connections, it wouldn't be a total surprise if lvaro Morte returns in the new Berlin-focused series.

In addition, Martin Berrote, also known as Palermo, appeared in flashbacks with The Professor and Berlin in Money Heist, as time-stamped in Italy five years earlier. In one of these flashbacks, Berlin and Palermo share a kiss that could provide a rich backstory for the new drama, further justifying why he chose to have an affair with Tatiana over Palermo. Still, with five episodes of Money Heist Season 5 left for fans to enjoy, perhaps these final installments will provide further clues about the fan-favorite character's backstory before he makes his solo outing.
